Review: Crimestoppers: TV's Greatest Cop Themes
3 / 5 Stars
TV Land and Rhino Records have dug into the television archives to pull together a collection of the "greatest" cop themes. Most of the ones you would expect are here, including a few you might have forgotten. Beginning with the classic "Dragnet", the version included here is a longer one than heard on the television show, and has a great swinging jazz bit beyond the "dum dum-dum dum" that we all know and love. Other fast-jazzy numbers include "The Mod Squad", Quincy Jones' "Ironside", Sammy Davis, Jr.'s "Baretta's Theme" from "Baretta", and "The Rookies" by Elmer Bernstein.
The expected numbers are also here, including "Hawaii Five-O", "The Streets of San Francisco", "Theme from S.W.A.T.", "Miami Vice", and "Kojak". The quality of all of the songs varies from mono, to high-fidelity stereo. I suppose it just depended on the source. In fact, some cues aren't necessarily from the television show - they are from a record single, and don't hold up as well as the original (like "CHiPs" which uses dialogue and sound effects). Also, there are plenty of cop shows that aren't represented, such as "T.J. Hooker" and the great big-band theme from "Police Squad".
All in all, this is a rather solid sampling of some of the best cop show themes from the 1950s through the 1980's. So while "N.Y.P.D. Blue is missing, we do get "Hill Street Blues" and Randy Newman's "Under The Gun" from that great hit, "Cop Rock". If you want a good taste of 1970's television themes (most of the themes on the album are from that prolific decade), then this album should satisfy.
